While there are many shows on the air that should never have made it past one season (Homeland I’m looking in your direction!), there are also plenty TV classics that didn’t. Even without the longevity of a Seinfeld or an X-Files, they still stay with us. Here’s the 10 best:
10. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip

Viewers never seemed to understand – until The Newsroom – that Aaron Sorkin could be just as poignant, witty and profound about television as he was about politics in The West Wing. Perhaps it was too close to 30 Rock. Either way, it was as doomed as the sketch show it depicted.
9. John from Cincinnati

This mystical surfing drama with religious undertones was too pretentious even for HBO viewers. At 10 episodes, it remains impenetrable. But we wonder what Deadwood creator David Milch could have done with the idea given time. It could have been a modern-day Bible instead of an L. Ron Hubbard novel.
8. The Tick

This tale of underwhelming hobbyist superheroes had been an animated series, and is soon to be revived by TV vampire-maker Netflix. But regretfully we only had one original season of the live-action version, and not nearly enough of Patrick Warburton in a blue skull onesie! All together now! SPOON!!!!!!!
7. Life on Mars

The British version of this time-travel police drama only lasted 2 seasons. But, hey, that’s a long time for British TV! The American re-make didn’t make it past one, which is a shame as it managed a convincing transatlantic makeover of the 70s nostalgia and kitsch fun of the original.
6. Luck

Another David Milch series aborted after one season. This time it was the producers’ concerns for animal welfare that left this horse-racing melodrama barely out of the gate. Two horses died in production, and that wasn’t a hit rate they wanted to continue. It was bad luck for good television.
5. Police Squad!

Immortalized in pop culture by The Naked Gun series, the original TV exploits of Lieutenant Frank ‘Shirley’ Drebin was a spoof aimed at wooden cop shows like Dragnet and The Untouchables. Way ahead of its time, and slickly made, it was gag-for-gag one of the best TV comedies ever made.
4. Cop Rock

This cop show musical (yes, you read that correctly!) didn’t even make it to midseason. Too genre-bending for the 80s, it paved the way for musical television like Glee and now it seems there isn’t a network TV show that hasn’t had at least one musical episode. A showstopper, literally!
3. The Prisoner

This cult 60s fantasy thriller was so out there it had nowhere left to go after 17 episodes. A bizarre dream version of the spy drama Secret Agent (with star Patrick McGoohan playing much the same character in both), it’s one of TV’s best experiments. So who was Number 1?
2. Firefly

The premature cancellation of Joss Whedon’s dirty (in the debris sense) space opera enraged sci-fi fans like never before (or at least not since Jar-Jar Binks), though they eventually got a movie – Serenity – and…well, virtually every other show on the air! It seems that in space nobody can hear you…troll!
1. Freaks and Geeks

The cast are too old now and they’re in every movie that comes out, but there’s still overwhelming demand for another season of this high-school comedy. Essentially a Wonder Years for the remaining 99.99999% of the population that didn’t draw a life lesson from every single incident of school life.
